Van Ninh - Cam Lo Expressway and SSC Vietnam's Capability Milestone in S®E STRIP Reinforced Earth Wall Solutions

With a total length of 65.5 km and an investment of nearly 10,000 billion VND, the Van Ninh - Cam Lo Expressway serves as a vital traffic artery driving socio-economic growth in the North Central region. Officially opened to traffic on August 19, 2025, the project stands as a testament to the relentless efforts of the construction units.

At this project, Vietnam Wire Structure Construction Joint Stock Company (SSC Vietnam) — a member of Minh Duc Construction Group — left a significant milestone with its specialized S®E STRIP reinforced earth wall construction solution.

SSC Vietnam supplied nearly 200,000 linear meters of polymeric reinforcement strips along with matching auxiliary material systems for the areas of Bridge 9A, Bridge 9D, the Tam Hiep overpass, and the DT75 bridge. The synchronized supply of components — including D10 lifting pins, D16 guide bars, HDPE plastic bearing pads, and geotextiles — ensured continuous on-site construction while strictly controlling the quality of the reinforced earth wall system.

By April 2025, the project had only about two months remaining to complete the main line according to schedule, while the remaining workload was immense. The reinforced earth wall items at the QL9D overpass, Tam Hiep, and QL9A areas were deployed concurrently. Meanwhile, the reinstatement sections of the Ho Chi Minh Highway at Km684+500 - Km686+500 and Km707+525 - Km707+800 had only reached about 50% of their volume. Facing intense schedule pressure, SSC Vietnam dispatched a team of technical experts directly to the site to provide solution counseling, guide panel installations, and support execution at every deployment front.

Under the harsh summer weather conditions of Quang Tri, with temperatures soaring past 36°C, SSC's technical team maintained close coordination with the main contractor. By closely monitoring the field, handling arising issues on time, and accompanying the construction process step-by-step, they contributed significantly to securing both the schedule and quality of the deployed items.

The solution applied at the project is the S®E STRIP reinforced earth wall system, which utilizes polymeric reinforcement strips composed of high-tenacity Polyester fibers encased in a protective Polyethylene sheath. The material features tensile characteristics that strictly comply with the ASTM D6637 standard, offering strength grades ranging from 30 to 100 kN and a design lifespan of up to 120 years. Thanks to these high-molecular polymer properties, the system operates stably under severe environmental conditions, such as high heat, humidity, prolonged water submergence, or significant temperature fluctuations.

The reinforcement strip rolls have lengths ranging from 100 to 150 meters and a lightweight profile of only 12 to 20 kg, making them highly favorable for transport and manual execution. The installation process is carried out by unrolling the strips from the coil, threading them through the pre-cast anchoring recesses on the concrete panels, and applying a slight tension to stabilize the reinforcement layout before proceeding with soil backfilling and compaction. This streamlined workflow effectively shortens construction time while ensuring the long-term stability and structural integrity of the retaining structure.

The selection and application of the S®E STRIP solution right from the early stages demonstrated clear efficiency during implementation, particularly in a context demanding rapid progress under complex site conditions. It proved to be not only a technically fitting engineering choice but also an effective solution for optimizing on-site execution performance.

The Van Ninh - Cam Lo Expressway project is one of the key national transport infrastructure works holding vital significance in accelerating socio-economic development in the Central region. SSC Vietnam's comprehensive involvement — from material supply and technical consultancy to practical hands-on construction support to deliver the project on schedule — serves as a clear proof of its execution capability in the field of reinforced earth walls and geotechnical engineering.
